Hello Opponauts,

I am looking for some advice - especially from the LALD crowd.

A close friend of mine passed away from cancer nearly a year ago. In his will I was left with his enormous collection of diecast cars. He stated also that if I chose to sell it, that a portion of the proceeds would go to a scholarship fund that his family was to set up after his death.

While having a collection of this magnitude is neat, it is beyond what I have the storage capabilities for! My hope is to hold onto a small percentage of them for myself and my family (like, the ones I remember fondly from our childhood) and then find someone who can enjoy the remainder. Before he passed he estimated that the collection includes somewhere between 12 and 15 thousand cars.

Does someone here have any resources I may be able to take advantage of to perhaps help determine the value of the collection and/or finding a buyer for it? If so, please get in touch with me by email:

In the meantime, I’m hoping to write a short story about them and will take some time here and there to take pictures of some of the cars to give a small showcase of what is here. If anyone at LALD would like to give me permission to post there (at least while this collection is in my possession), I would be happy to share them there!

Wow, that is a seriously impressive collection. And awesome that he knew you’d appreciate it, sounds like a pretty great friend!

I don’t really have any advice to offer, but I wish you the best of luck and look forward to the story/pictures.

Wauw, that is quite an immense collection. I dont have any resources, however, if I could help, Id love to take a few off your hands. I cant do thousand, not even near a 100, but I could do something at least, especially knowing that the money is going to a good cause.

If you don’t want to deal with trying to sell them through ebay yourself, you may want to look into ebth.com (Everything but the House), they are an online estate sale company. I follow their diecast auctions from time to time, and well-sorted collections seem to go for decent money.

I noticed you are in Vermont. I am in RI and might be interested in coming up and looking at the collection and possibly buying some cars(probably ~100 at most though). And if you are willing to sell to the LaLD community I’d be willing to help facilitate that. I’m not looking for payment or a cut, just to help get some of that amazing collection into the hands of our little community.

You can reach me directly at improbcat at the gmails.

Some castings could be very valuable, especially metal ones.

First off, sorry for your loss.

That sounds like an incredible collections. I’ve sent you an invite to join LaLD. Feel free to post and share what ever you’d like.

As Pixel said, EBTH seems to be the up and coming inline estate sale auction site. I havent sold anything though them, but I have purchased models there. It’s different from eBay, they count down the bid rather than counting down the timer, more like a traditional auction.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do with these cars!

Thank you. My hope is to try to keep the collection together as best I can. But, if I decide to start selling individually or in smaller batches, I will make sure that the LALD community is first to be aware of that!!

Absolutely. The majority of the packaged ones are from the 90's through today. But, there are plenty of old ones, especially in the opened packages.
